Running head: Greater Detail Can Reduce Perceived Likelihood 1 Unpacking Unpacking: Greater Detail Can Reduce Perceived Likelihood

چکیده
Past research suggests that a categorical event is perceived to be more likely if its subcases are explicitly delineated or “unpacked.” In six studies, we find that unpacking can often make an event seem less likely, especially when the details being unpacked are already highly accessible. Process evidence shows that the provision of greater detail accompanying unpacking reduces the simplicity of an event, and that this dysfluency is used as a negative cue for likelihood. This work establishes processing fluency as a mechanism which opposes the other effects of unpacking, such as enhanced accessibility.

متن کاملUnpacking a time interval lengthens its perceived temporal distance
In quantity estimation, people often perceive that the whole is less than the sum of its parts. The current study investigated such an unpacking effect in temporal distance judgment. Our results showed that participants in the unpacked condition judged a given time interval longer than those in the packed condition, even the time interval was kept constant between the two conditions. Furthermor...
متن کاملThe unpacking effect in evaluative judgments: When the whole is less than the sum of its parts
Any category or event can be described in more or less detail. Although these different descriptions can reflect the same event objectively, they may not reflect the same event subjectively. Research on Support Theory led us to predict that more detailed descriptions would produce more extreme evaluations of categories or events than less detailed descriptions. Four experiments demonstrated thi...
متن کاملFocus, Repacking, and the Judgment of Grouped Hypotheses
Previous research has found that judged probabilities of two complementary singleton hypotheses sum to one. However, there may be important dierences between judgment of singleton and disjunctive hypotheses. We suggest that because of a general preference for singletons as the focus of judgment, disjunctions are more likely to be repacked into singletons when focal than when alternative. This ...
